  • 800

Hibiscus, also known as roselle or rosella, flor de Jamaica, sorrel, and red sorrel. Hibiscus is used to add the red colour to herbal teas. Hibiscus has an almost "cranberry" flavour; bitter sweet, which gives it a nice tang to any herbal tea drink. Here, at The Herb Shed, hibiscus is added to our Lift Herbal Energy Tea.

Both dried and fresh hibiscus can be used to make hibiscus tea, hibiscus cordial, and jam, and the flowers can also be eaten cooked or raw, such as in a salad. Hibiscus is also used in the Jamaican drink Aqua Fresca; sometimes rum is also added for a cooling alcoholic drink.

In parts of Africa, such as The Sudan & Egypt, hibiscus is used to maintain normal body temperature and for upper respiratory health.

Dried hibiscus contains vitamin C, various minerals, several kinds of organic acids, and other substances such as polysaccharides and flavonoids that give edible hibiscus products a characteristic deep red color. Some scientific studies indicate that drinking hibiscus tea can help lower blood pressure.
