Description: Coltsfoot has been used for over 2500 years in European and Chinese traditional medicine to treat chest infections and respiratory conditions of all sorts. It has strong anti-spasmodic and demulcent properties which aid the suppression of coughs and help to ease breathing. Traditionally, coltsfoot was burned to produce a smoke for inhalation.
Today, it is often enjoyed as a tea, a tincture or a syrup for any chest or respiratory complaints, and in particular to clear congestions and against spasmodic coughs. It is often combined with mullein, white horsehound, liquorice, thyme or wild cherry.
Coltsfoot’s qualities may also make it a valuable herb for sufferers of asthma and to boost the immune system short term. This herb should, however, not be used for longer than 3-4 weeks at a time. Children under the age of 6, as well as pregnant or lactating women should not be administered coltsfoot.
